Stories of Generosity
"He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God." 2 Corinthians 9:10-11

For many months I had been laboring with the question "What is generosity?" I could not get my hands around it. I was pretty sure it was a heart issue, not so much one of the mind. I struggled with my own selfish nature. Why give up what was “mine”? That amount over and above the tithe is what I felt should be mine. In my head I knew He was the owner of it all, as stated in I Chronicles 29:11 "...for everything in heaven and earth is yours." So what is the issue? My heart!
Then the Lord, in His love, permitted John Piper to explain it to me in his book Desiring God. Piper pealed apart II Corinthians 8:1-4 for me. In these verses we have the Macedonians, the poorest of the poor, by God’s grace, having overflowing joy in their giving. It hit me, it is neither my head nor my heart when it comes to generosity, it is God’s grace providing the generosity. God’s joy filled my heart with this understanding. My wife joined me in this exciting good news. With freedom, we began our giving journey. Months later we have this continued joy and at the same time, all bills are paid, dollars went into savings, and funds to pass along as we see a need. It is not all about dollars. We are also having great joy in giving away our time and other gifts the Lord has provided.
